In between weddings both this weekend and last, I made it out to Phoenix for the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing. I gave a talk at Open Source Day about starting in open source. Rikki Endsley of Red Hat wrote up a summary of my talk, and Serena Larson of ReadWrite wrote an article based on the talk and a brief interview we did beforehand. My slides are here.

Three things to share from Open Source Bridge, which I went to this week.
Back in March, at LibrePlanet 2014, I organized and participated in a panel session on the intersection of open science and free software with Jeff Warren of Public Lab and Madeleine Price Ball of Open Humans.
\* A friend asked what SCaLE stood for, and I got everything but the 'a'. He laughed and said, "It could mean literally anything!" For the record, it's the a in *Ca*lifornia.
Last weekend I flew out to Urbana Champaign to give a talk at their annual Reflections \| Projections conference. The talk was on how to get started contributing to free software, and a big portion was on bugs - how to report them and to fix them. It was therefore painfully ironic when the free software I had used to prepare the talk - LibreOffice - essentially deleted the presentation an hour or so before I had to give it.
I've given three public talks in the last six months. What really strikes me is how different these talks were, in content, structure, and intent.
