Shauna's Blog

Blogkeeping

It’s been about a year since I started this blog, and I’m slowly getting a sense of what I want it to be, on multiple levels.

When I first made this blog, I’d just spent a few months learning PHP and was eager to build the whole thing for myself from scratch. It was highly satisfying, and perfectly serviceable, but I’m much more interested now in group projects and the open source community, so it’s a logical step for me to move over to wordpress. I turned my current design into a theme (available here for now), so the new site looks virtually identical, but it has a wordpress engine. Making the theme presenting its own challenges - for instance, on the old design the links in the tree branch were hard-coded in via an image map, but with a theme I wanted users to be able to customize it. The fairly simple solution was to make the image a background, add a variable to specify which links when in the tree, and call them via a wordpress function styled a set amount from the right. Anyway, I’m looking forward to contributing to the community. (And not having to SFTP and open phpMyAdmin every time I want to update the blog.)

I’m also hoping to update more frequently. I think and write a lot - maybe too much! - and could probably throw up a couple posts a day without sweating it. I don’t want a here’s-everything-ever blog, so I need to filter myself somehow. But I don’t know what that filter should be. So here’s version 2.0.

And that’s that! Nothing should change for readers/commenters, but if you have trouble with anything, as always, let me know!
